The Complete Study Abroad Process: Step by Step
Clarify Your Goal (Week 1–2)
Answer: What field? What degree (Masters/MBA/PhD)? Which countries? Goal — PR or career or education? Budget range? Do this BEFORE researching universities.
Choose Your Destination Country (Month 1)
Narrow to 1–2 countries based on goals, budget, PR possibility, and language. Research visa requirements, job market, and university rankings in your field.
Take English Test (Month 2–3)
Register and appear for IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL, or Duolingo depending on your country. Allow 2–4 months for preparation and potentially 2 attempts. Don't delay this — it's on the critical path.
GRE/GMAT (If Required) (Month 2–4)
Not all programs require GRE/GMAT — confirm first. If required, allow 3–4 months of preparation. Many Canadian and German programs don't require GRE. US universities still predominantly require it for technical programs.
Shortlist Universities (Month 3–5)
Shortlist 6–10 universities: 2–3 ambitious, 3–4 moderate (realistic), 2–3 safe. Research admission requirements, program curriculum, research faculty (for PhD), placement records, scholarships, and student testimonials.
Prepare Application Documents (Month 4–7)
Gather and prepare: academic transcripts, degree certificates, CV/resume, Statement of Purpose (SOP), Letters of Recommendation (LOR), work experience letters, portfolio (if applicable).
Submit Applications (Month 7–10)
Submit applications before deadlines. Deadlines vary: UK UCAS Oct 15 (Oxbridge), Jan 31 (others). Canadian universities Nov–Jan for Sept intake. German universities May–Jul for winter, Nov–Jan for summer. USA Nov–Jan for Sept intake.
Receive Offers + Accept (Month 9–12)
Compare offers: scholarship amounts, program quality, location, accommodation. Accept your chosen university's offer. Pay deposit if required. Request official acceptance letter for visa.
Apply for Student Visa (Month 11–14)
Gather visa documents: acceptance letter, financial proof, accommodation proof, English test scores, passport. Apply online. Allow 4–12 weeks for processing depending on country. Apply as early as possible after receiving your offer.
Pre-Departure Preparation + Depart (Month 14–15)
Book flights, arrange accommodation, pack (including documents — keep originals separate from copies), get travel insurance, open a forex card/NRE account, join your university's Indian student group, and inform your bank about international travel.
