UK English Requirements: University vs. Student Visa

There are two separate English requirements for studying in the UK: (1) University admission requirements and (2) UK Student Visa (UKVI) requirements. A university might accept Duolingo or MOI certificate for admissions — but the UK visa may still require a UKVI-approved SELT test like IELTS UKVI or Trinity SELT.

MOI Certificate: The IELTS-Free Admission Pathway
For Indian students who studied in English-medium schools and colleges throughout, a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate is the most cost-effective way to skip IELTS for university admissions.

- • Completed 10th and 12th from English-medium school (CBSE/ICSE/State board with English medium)
- • Completed bachelor's degree from an English-medium Indian university
- • Scored 70%+ in English in 12th standard
- • All academic transcripts are in English
📋 How to Get MOI Certificate
- Contact your school's principal / college registrar
- Request a letter on official letterhead stating the medium of instruction was English
- Get it attested by the institution's stamp
- Have it notarized if the UK university requires it
- Submit with your university application
⚠️ MOI Certificate Cannot Replace SELT for UK Visa
Even if a UK university accepts your MOI certificate for admission, the UK Home Office (UKVI) requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT) for the student visa in most cases. The most commonly used is IELTS for UKVI. This is a separate requirement from university admissions.

🎯 Smart Approach for Indian Students
Strategy 1: Take IELTS Once, Use It for Both
Take IELTS Academic (not UKVI version) for university admissions. Then take IELTS for UKVI for the visa. Note: These are different tests even though both are called "IELTS".
Strategy 2: Duolingo for Uni + IELTS UKVI for Visa
Use the cheaper, faster Duolingo test to apply to UK universities, then take the IELTS for UKVI specifically for the visa application. This saves ₹8,000–15,000 in coaching if you only need it once for visa purposes.
Strategy 3: MOI Certificate + IELTS UKVI Only
Use MOI certificate for admission (if accepted by your target university), then take IELTS for UKVI only for the visa. You still need IELTS once, but avoid coaching costs since you only need it for visa, not admission.
